Review essay on Protestant clergy women and women serving in lay leadership roles in the Catholic Church, drawing together and summarizing findings from recent research. Dr. Edward Lehman, who has conducted a number of studies on this topic is doing the review essay and will reflect also on policy implications that it suggests. Rationale: Given the extensive research that has been done in recent years on the experiences of women clergy, we did not think it necessary to commission a new study in this area; however, we believe that a review of this literature will contribute in significant ways to our understanding of the current state of pastoral leadership. What are some of the major findings of these studies? What advances have clergy women made? What obstacles persist? What are the policy implications that need to be addressed? We anticipate that this review essay will provide some answers to these questions. Professor Lawrence Mamiya of Vassar College will write a report for us on the status of ministry in historic African-American churches. Dr. Mamiya is currently undertaking a study of African-American congregations, and the study of pastoral leadership will be done in connection with this study. Rationale: The rationale for this project is similar to that for clergy women. A major difference, however, is that fewer studies of the particular issues facing African-American clergy are available. Dr. Mamiya's analysis of existing data and data from his current research will make an important contribution to understanding unique problems that African-American pastoral leaders are facing. Hispanic Clergy (To be determined) Rationale: This study has a parallel purpose to the study of African-American clergy. |
